Fr. John McGarry, S.J.Jubilee Year: A Vision, a Mission, a Prayer

Dear Brother Jesuits and Lay Partners in Ministry:

The Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., has declared a Year of Jubilee from December 3, 2005, to December 3, 2006. This Jubilee Year will commemorate the anniversaries of three of the first companions of the Society of Jesus: the 450th anniversary of the death of St. Ignatius Loyola (July 31, 1556); the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Francis Xavier, S.J. (April 7, 1506) and Blessed Peter Faber, S.J. (April 13, 1506).

This is an opportunity for all of us to renew our commitment to living the vision, mission and prayers of these first Jesuits through our experience of the Spiritual Exercises and the apostolic works that flow from them.

Attached you will find a listing of the activities and programs that some of the Jesuit communities and apostolic works in the California Province are planning to celebrate this Jubilee Year and highlight our Ignatian charism in the Church. This list is what was reported to the Provincial Assistants in each of the ministry sectors - Social/International, Secondary and Pre-Secondary Education, Higher Education, and Pastoral Ministries - and the Office of Development and Advancement as of November 1, 2005.

I am grateful to each of you and to the ministries of the Province for your attentiveness and participation in celebrating this Jubilee Year. Sdditional information about Jubilee Year activities in the worldwide Society of Jesus is available through the California Province website (www.calprov.org) and the website of the U.S. Jesuit Conference (www.jesuit.org). At this latter website you will find a Jubilee prayer that is very appropriate for personal, communal and apostolic use during this year.

From November 21 through December 4, I will be in Spain attending several meetings of Provincials of the worldwide Society of Jesus. On December 3, 2005, the beginning of the Jubilee Year, I will be participating with Fr. General and all of the Provincials at the Congregation of Provincials in Loyola, Spain, the birthplace of St. Ignatius. On that day, as we inaugurate the Jubilee, I will indeed pray in thanksgiving for all the members of the California Province and our lay partners for your love of, and commitment to, the mission of the Society of Jesus.

As we approach Thanksgiving Day, let us always be mindful of God's many gifts and blessings in our lives, in our families and among our friends, and in the work we do.
