Mercedes was born in Guatemala and came to the US in 1965. She joined the parish in 1987 and was immediately involved with the Base Communities (Comunidades de Base), which organize neighborhood Masses, the Stations of the Cross, and Posadas. During that time she was also the coordinator to LAPD for Neighborhood Watch. She later became the coordinator for the Spanish speaking lectors, and from 1996-1998 served as the Parish Council president. She has long been involved with community organizing through LA Voice and for years has been an advocate for low income housing assistance. Mercedes is currently serving as our Liturgy Coordinator. She has three children, one of whom is also active at the parish.
